The Barrie Jr. Colts won their first #RedHats at the U16 AAA age group in over 20 years at the OMHA Championship presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario, beating the Peterborough Minor Petes 5-2 in the gold medal game.

The team swept group play at the weekend, held at the CAA Centre in Brampton. The Jr. Colts held the top three spots on the leading scorers table, topped by Alex McLean with a goal and seven assists in three games and followed by Nathan Amidovski and James Elliott with seven points apiece.

Both the Minor Petes and Jr. Colts finished as the top seeds in their group play.

“Just to win it with this group is unreal and just an amazing feeling,” said forward Logan Hawery. “It’s an honour and a great feeling that our team was the one to accomplish it.”

“I think Barrie is proud of us and how well we’ve done together as a group,” echoed Amidovski of bringing home the #RedHats.

Andreas Mikroginnakis broke a 2-2 tie in the third period, and Mason Cruzet sealed it late in the frame as the Markham Waxers earned #RedHats at the OMHA U18 AAA Championships presented by the Egg Farmers of Ontario.

The Waxers beat the Burlington Eagles 4-2 in the gold medal game after defeating the Guelph Jr. Gryphons in the semi-finals earlier in the day.

This was the Waxers’s first win at the U18 AAA group since 2006.

“It’s great for everyone. The team came through with a big victory. We came through and worked hard and came out with a big W at the OMHAs,” said captain Ryan Piggott”

The Waxers’ Tate Collins led all scorers with eight points in three round robin games, followed by Sam Mudie and Trent Gates of the Halton Hurricanes who each put up six points.

“At the end of the day, these guys worked hard. We got injuries, we got callups from the AA team who did really, really well with us,” said head coach Dan Daoust. “Everybody bought into the systems that we were doing. When it was time to change things on the fly, they bought into that too. Great bunch of kids.” 

In the final game of round robin play, the Eagles beat the Waxers 7-3 to earn their spot in the semi-finals, while the Waxers had already secured their spot by that game.

This was the first of four weekends of OMHA Championships presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario. The next three weeks will see 43 more Champions crowned at events in Newmarket, Oakville, Whitby, Kingston and Halton across the U10 to U21 age groups and AAA to Tier 3 divisions.
