1-on-1 that evolves into 2-on-2

  • Drills start with F walking out of the corner around the top of the circle for a shot on net.
  • After the shot F stops at the top of the crease.
  • After F takes their shot, the next player in line will make a direct pass to the first D in line.
  • Once D receives the pass, they will walk across the blue line, dragging the puck off the wall to the middle of the ice.
  • Once D gets to the middle of the ice they will take a shot on net. Where F will be creating a low-screen looking for a deflection.
  • After the second shot, an indirect pass off the wall will be made to the second D in line. Upon receiving that pass they will go D-to-D to the middle of the ice. Once the first D receives the pass they will take another shot on net.
  • After all three shots have been taken, the second F in line will make a pass to the D at the middle of the ice, who will one-touch the puck to the F in front of the net who has already started skating up ice. This will create a 1-on-1.
  • Both F and D will execute a 1-on-1 down the ice to the far end goal.

Key Points

  • No rebounds, each repetition should begin once the shot is taken.  This will allow the goalie to get set for the next shot.
  • Good passes are key, bad passes will kill the flow of the drill!
  • D should be shooting through the screen or for sticks to create a deflection.
  • The second pass to the D on the blue line should be indirect off the boards or the glass.
  • The forward should be attacking through the middle of the neutral zone, working from the middle of the ice to outside the faceoff dots when entering the far zone.  Driving wide on the D as they enter the far offensive zone.

  • As players get used to the flow of the drill, coaches can add a second F to create a 2-on-1 and eventually add a second D to create a 2-on-2.
  • This drill can be done out of both sides of the ice, players will need to keep their heads up during the 1-on-1 and stay to their half of the ice.
