Community stories from across the OMHA presented by Dodge

There are so many OMHA teams out helping in their communities no matter the time of year. We are sent many great submissions from teams about what they are doing to make their neighbourhood a better place. The OMHA is so proud of the efforts of all of our teams for knowing the values of respect and community.

Here are some of the submissions we have received over the last few weeks.

Get involved in the community and share your experiences with us! You can submit your team's story and picture using the form at the bottom of the page.

Pickering Panthers Tyke MD7

A player from Oshawa had his hockey bag stolen at a local rink. The boy's father was was a coach for the Oshawa Tyke MD7 team and an old classmate of a Pickering coach. After facing them in a game, the two met and the items had still not been returned. The Panthers took matters into their own hands, raising money for the kid and buying some new equipment and gifts to replace what was stolen. The story ended up being very overwhelming and for something that was simply to teach the kids on the team about giving back did so much more.

Loyalist Jets Midget

The Jets came together during the cold winter months to raise money and donate winter boots for the Napanee Area Community Health Centre Warm Toes program to make sure others well well-equipped for the snow.

Embro Edge Minor Hockey

What started 41 years ago as an act of kindness has carried on into an annual tradition that's lasted generations. After a snowstorm left a team from Kent, Ohio stranded in Ontario, the Embro hockey families took them in for the night and it turned into a cross-border tournament. Alternating locations each year, families stay with local hosts and create friendships and learning opportunities. Players of all ages from both cities get involved and it's a good time for all.

Milton Winterhawks Peewee AE White

Bound to a wheelchair and speaking through a computer due to a neurodegenerative condition that struck when he was just a year old, Alex Schryver had never known what it’s like to be part of a hockey team. The Winterhawks worked with a local organization and made Alex a part of their team and had him drop the puck at one of their games. The group from Milton have embraced Alex as a new teammate.

Ingersoll Express Midget

Two dedicated parents from the Express team took it upon themselves to capture every one of the boys' games with photos and live coverage, including commentaries and interviews with the players and coaches themselves. All of this was then shared for all members of the community to enjoy.

Brampton 45's Minor Hockey

Members of the Brampton 45's association took time on the weekend to assist in the on-ice portion of Hockey Canada's Try Hockey program. They brought new skaters onto the ice, some for the very first time, and helped them with equipment and skating. It was a great way to give back to the community and share the joy of hockey!

Whitby Wildcats Minor Midget AAA

The team got involved at a Dimes for Times event by Their Opportunity, an organization that raises funds to keep kids involved in sports and recreation activities. The Wildcats assisted in running an event in Oshawa and raised money at various events throughout the season like car washes to donate to the cause.
