Five deserving volunteers recognized for outstanding contributions

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association presented its awards at the Annual General Meeting held at the Sheraton Parkway Hotel in Richmond Hill on June 8th to recognize the outstanding achievements of its athletes and volunteers. The OMHA recognizes excellence in various areas of minor hockey with five distinctive awards.

Honour Award

The Honour Award is a prestigious award presented to a person who has made an outstanding voluntary contribution to minor hockey for a considerable period of time. The Honour Award recognizes a volunteer at the local level and any OMHA minor hockey organization may nominate a person for this award.

Helen Ford of Oakville Minor Hockey was recognized as this year’s recipient. She has been a part of Oakville Minor Hockey for over 40 years and has been called the backbone of the organization. She's served multiple roles in the community and is a constant volunteer no matter how big or small the job may be. Helen is a positive person who wants to make a lasting impression and a great experience for the players.

Excellence in Development Award

The Excellence in Development Award was established to recognize and honour an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to hockey development programming in minor hockey in the OMHA. Nominees can be from any area of hockey development, including player development, coaching, officiating, safety and program administration.

This year’s winner is Mike Hendrickson of the Kent Minor Hockey Association. He is the Vice-President of House League and manages almost 900 players. He is dedicated to making sure the half-ice and cross-ice programming is set up correctly and runs smoothly. He is invested in the development of the players and is always looking for ways to improve the program.

Wally Scott Bursary

The Wally Scott Bursary is presented in recognition of outstanding commitment to community service, athletics and academics. This bursary reflects the achievements of a young hockey player who is committed to his or her community, athletic ability and academic achievement. Recipients receive an award towards their post-secondary education.

There are two winners of the Wally Scott Bursary this year - Ethan Luce of Orangeville and Rhys Kraft of Barrie. Both maintained a high academic standing throughout their high school education. Ethan will be studying engineering and Rhys will be studying medicine.

Patricia Hartley Administrators Award

The Patricia Hartley Administrators Award is presented in recognition of exemplary service in the field of sports administration. This award reflects the achievements of a local executive board member or volunteer staff person towards the efficient operations of an association and the betterment of hockey. The recipient of this award is selected for outstanding leadership within their own association, commitment to their organization and overall involvement in minor hockey.

The recipient of this year's award is Ann Flynn of the Stayner Minor Hockey Association. Ann treats every player equally and is organized and hard-working. Even though she no longer has any kids in minor hockey she still dedicates her time to the association. She is a role model in the organization and is very knowledgeable in her position.

George H. Carver Media Award

The George H. Carver Media Award is designed to show appreciation for the invaluable coverage of minor hockey in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association provided by local media outlets. During the course of any minor hockey season, players and their parents rely on local media for coverage of their teams and leagues. For this reason the OMHA has elected to profile one media outlet for their excellent coverage of minor hockey during the minor hockey season.

St. Mary's Pat Payton is this year’s recipient and has spent countless hours covering the Rock. Pat has dedicated countless hours to make sure that the local teams and players get their name in the paper. Even at away games, he will get in contact with the coaches to ensure he can report on the results.
