Associations can apply to host a First Shift program

Looking to introduce new faces to hockey in your community?

Applications are open for OMHA Centres to apply to host a First Shift program during the 2018-19 season.

The First Shift mission is to change the way hockey is offered, to inspire new families to join our community, and enroll their kids in our sport. Because of the program’s belief in all that hockey has to offer kids, their families and our communities, First Shift was designed to break down barriers to entry by making hockey accessible, affordable, and most importantly, fun!

Associations are encouraged to review the application criteria and submit an online application if they wish to be selected as a host community for Fall 2018 or Winter 2019. All program details and criteria, as well as application form are available at the First Shift website.

More than 25 OMHA Member Associations have successfully hosted this program to date.

This unique experience, designed to help kids aged 6-10 who have never registered to play hockey fall in love with the sport, is a six-week learn to play program which focuses on having fun while learning basic skills. Full head-to-toe hockey equipment is included with registration, which is only $199 and also includes:

  • a Welcome Event – information, education, and an equipment fitting session
  • six Learn-to-Play ice sessions designed by Hockey Canada; and
  • a complete set of hockey gear, including: helmet combo (with facemask), shoulder pads, elbow pads, neck guard, shorts with jock/jill, pants, hockey socks, shin guards, jersey, gloves, stick and skates.

For minor hockey associations, the First Shift offers the opportunity to bring new families into your hockey community and increase membership. There will be administrative support offered throughout the programming both on and off the ice.

Over the past four seasons, The First Shift has seen more than 16,000 children trying hockey for the first time across the country.

For more information on the program please go to visit the First Shift or apply to host an event here.
