Coaches are a crucial part of any hockey team. They are responsible for fostering an enjoyment of the game and teaching players new skills and growing their abilities. There are many lesson and development plans out there for coaches to take advantage of, including right here on the OMHA website.

The OMHA offers a number of tools, articles and programs that help coaches plan practices and learn new skills and techniques. Here are just some of the resources that the OMHA delivers:

Chalk Talk

Chalk Talk provides age-appropriate skills, drills and progressions for players to improve their skating techniques. Many of the drills in this series put players in situations that they will encounter in games – this presents the players with the opportunity to create, problem solve, read and react and use the concepts they have learned in practice.

Some of the drills in the Chalk Talk series are specific to certain age groups or positions. They provide step by step breakdowns of how to properly teach and exercise each drill. Videos are available that provide visual examples of what each drill should look like when executed correctly.

Video Coach

Video Coach is a series of articles which review a video clip from game action and then break down the sequence into frames identifying key skills, individual and team tactics, strategy and hockey IQ. Video is a great teaching tool that can be used by both players and coaches.

The series gives examples from professional games on how different skills and tactics are put to use in real-time action. For visual learners, Video Coach gives frame-by-frame images of how players react to certain scenarios.

Maple Leafs Coaching Clinic

The Toronto Maple Leafs are offering a Free Half Day Coaching Clinic on Saturday January 6th for coaches of all levels across Ontario. The Coaches' Open House offers a unique opportunity to watch, listen and learn from experienced individuals who know what it takes to successfully teach the game at multiple levels.

Presentations are both on-ice and off-ice with topics including Possession Under Pressure, Developing Today's Goalie, Primary Technical & Tactical Key Teaching Points and Game Transition by Zones.

Players Club

The OMHA Players Club is all about providing new and exciting challenges to help players celebrate hockey skills and develop their game at home throughout the year. The 5000 Puck, 10,000 Touches and 30/30 Challenges each offer skill-building drills in different areas of the game that can be done in a player’s backyard, basement or driveway.

Players can register individually or as a team. While timeframe recommendations are given, the challenges can be done at a player’s own pace or schedule. The challenges teach more than just hockey skills, they offer lessons in responsibility, time management and dedication to a task.
