Rookie and Veteran recipients each month

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association and Nothers have teamed up for the Volunteer of the Month program – a ‘Rookie’ and a ‘Veteran’ volunteer will be recognized each month through a profile highlighting their involvement in the game of hockey.

We were thrilled to see so many deserving nominations and have highlighted two winners below for January!

The Rookie (2> years) winner for January is Michelle Mathoney of Guelph Minor Hockey! Here's her story as told by her nomination:

Michelle Mathoney deserves recognition for her extraordinary dedication and impact on the team. Now in her second year as team manager, this years U11A Guelph Gryphons manager, Michelle consistently goes above and beyond, balancing an impressive range of responsibilities with unmatched enthusiasm. She helps run and organize team social media, ensuring families and supporters stay engaged and informed. As the central organizer for sponsorships and fundraising, she plays a crucial role in securing resources that keep the team thriving. Michelle also chairs every team committee, providing leadership, structure, and direction across all areas.

Beyond her many responsibilities, Michelle truly loves the game of hockey. Her passion is rooted in the growth and development of the kids, and it shows in everything she does. She personally wrote the team handbook and players’ code of conduct, and still finds time to manage water bottles, record games, and even organize the home game music.

Michelle’s commitment, reliability, and positivity makes her the glue that holds everything together. At the same time, she is the first to say she couldn’t do it without the incredible help and support of the parents around her. Their dedication, teamwork, and willingness to step in whenever needed make a tremendous difference, and Michelle knows she cannot take all the credit.

Together, this collective effort creates a stronger, more connected team, and the impact is felt every single day.

What are some of your responsibilities as team manager?
As a team manager, I ensure that everything behind the scenes runs smoothly. I manage team fees and budget, schedule tournaments, ensure ice time is properly allocated, and help set up community initiatives. Most importantly, I help create and maintain a positive team culture where players, families, and staff feel supported and connected.

What do you like most about minor hockey?
What I love most about minor hockey is the sense of community and development it creates. It’s not just about winning games, but about helping young players build confidence, teamwork, and a love for the sport. Watching kids grow as people and athletes, supporting families, and making lasting memories together is what makes minor hockey truly special.

What have you learned in your role as a volunteer?
I have learned that the experience comes with both challenges and rewards. Organization and communication are essential, as it takes constant effort to keep everyone moving in the same direction. I’ve learned to be supportive, and understanding, knowing that each child’s experience is unique. Most importantly, I’ve learned the value of community and teamwork, and how rewarding it is to be part of something that positively impacts young athletes and their families.

The Veteran (2+ years) winner for January is Nicole Devereaux of Southwest Admirals Minor Hockey! Here's her story as told by her nomination:

Nicole Devereaux is the reason the Southwest Admirals association runs so smoothly. She spearheaded getting the new association up and running all while raising 3 young boys. Not only is she on the Admirals board in multiple positions, she volunteers with her sons teams AND is on the board for the Mid Huron Huskies minor hockey association. She is an unstoppable volunteer who is truly in it for the kids!

What are some of the roles you’ve held over your time as a volunteer?
I began my volunteering in 2019 with Seaforth Minor Hockey (formerly the Seaforth Stars), starting off as their Secretary and then moved into a Director role. A few years later, I became involved in the amalgamation process with a neighbouring centre, serving on the committee that helped establish what is now Mid Huron Minor Hockey (Mid Huron Huskies). Over the past 4 years, I have held the role of Technical Director with Mid Huron.

Last season, under the direction of the WOAA, our region undertook another amalgamation to deliver Rep A level hockey, and I again assisted on the amalgamation committee to help form the Southwest Admirals. I currently serve as the organization’s Co-Chair and Registrar.

In addition to my executive responsibilities, I am also the team manager for my youngest son’s U12A team and the team trainer for my oldest son’s U15A team.

How do you balance multiple volunteer positions at once?
Balancing multiple volunteer roles can be challenging, especially during the busiest times of the season. While some days are easier than others, staying focused on what matters most helps keep everything moving forward.

What keeps you volunteering every season?
The kids and their genuine gratitude, when they take time out of their day to stop you to say thanks, it means the world.
