OMHA Associations can now apply to host an NHL/NHLPA First Shift program in their community for the 2026–2027 season.

Since its launch in 2014, NHL/NHLPA First Shift has welcomed more than 68,000 children across 1,900+ programs nationwide, introducing young Canadians to hockey in a way that is fun, safe, accessible, and affordable. Designed specifically for first-time participants, the program removes traditional barriers to entry and creates a positive, inclusive introduction to the game.

At its core, First Shift is about more than learning to skate or handle a puck — it’s about creating a welcoming first experience that builds confidence, sparks joy, and opens the door to lifelong participation in hockey.
 
A Program Built on Inclusion and Opportunity
NHL/NHLPA First Shift is open to children ages 6–10 who have never previously registered in organized hockey. The program is intentionally designed to welcome families from all backgrounds, ensuring hockey is accessible regardless of race, gender, religion, ability, sexual orientation, or financial circumstance.

By prioritizing inclusion and community connection, First Shift helps associations grow participation while fostering an environment where every child feels valued and supported from day one.
 
Program Overview
Associations selected to host NHL/NHLPA First Shift will deliver a structured, turnkey program that includes:

• A Welcome Event: Participants receive head-to-toe BAUER hockey equipment, professionally fitted by experts.
• Six On-Ice Sessions: Sessions run once per week, on the same day, time, and arena, making scheduling simple for families. On-ice instruction focuses on fun, engaging games that teach basic skating and fundamental hockey skills.
• Transition Opportunities: Following the six sessions, participants can transition into a Minor Hockey Association-managed program, or in some communities, be placed directly onto a minor hockey team.

Associations approved to host NHL/NHLPA First Shift receive comprehensive support, including:

• Assistance with logistics, equipment shipments, and program setup
• Guidance on insurance, curriculum, and next steps into minor hockey
• Access to an interactive program website with timelines and resources
• Use of the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) portal to manage registration and program details in real time
• Potential NHL club involvement, including alumni appearances, mascots, facility use, and limited gifting
• Strategic support aimed at increasing girls’ participation
