Practical, actionable advice to help all athletes can safely participate in hockey

The Canadian Lung Association is hosting an upcoming webinar on October 2 that's especially relevant for anyone involved with young hockey players: "Safe in All Hands: What Parents, Educators, and Coaches Need to Know About Managing Childhood Asthma."

This session will provide crucial insights for ensuring kids with asthma can not only participate but thrive in hockey, focusing on asthma control at home, at school, and particularly on the ice and in the locker room.

Some of the topics to be covered, including a special emphasis on athletics, include:

  • How do I know my child's asthma is well controlled for intense physical activity like hockey?
  • If they have symptoms during the "back to school spike" or early season training, does this mean they need to change their medication?
  • What is my child's role in managing their asthma, especially during practices and games?
  • Who do I need to tell that my child has asthma, including team staff and fellow parents?
  • Who needs a copy of my child's asthma action plan (e.g., coach, trainer, school nurse)?
  • Should my child or a responsible adult keep their inhaler readily accessible during games and practices?
  • Can and should my child be as active as their peers, even pushing hard on the ice, despite their asthma?
  • Are there any specific activities or situations in hockey that my child should NOT do because of their asthma?
  • What do hockey coaches and trainers specifically need to know about asthma, including recognizing symptoms and proper response?
  • Are there any specific considerations for different hockey positions or training regimens regarding asthma?

The webinar will feature Dr. Alan Kaplan, a highly respected Family Physician with a special interest in respiratory medicine. Dr. Kaplan is the Chair for the Family Physician Airways Group of Canada, Vice President of the Respiratory Effectiveness Group, and a member of the Scientific Committee of GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma). His extensive experience and leadership in respiratory health make him an invaluable resource for this topic.

This webinar will offer practical, actionable advice to help ensure all young athletes with asthma can safely and confidently pursue their passion for hockey.
