Forwards should look to make passes in the neutral zone, encouraging puck movement

Theme

2on1/3on2/Backcheck/Zone Entry

Description

  • There will be 3 lines of forwards. F1 and F2 lines in the same corner, with the F3 line in the opposite corner at the other end and pucks in both corners.
  • Defenceman will be in the neutral zone along the wall on the same side of the ice as the F1 and F2 lines.
  • D1 will start just inside the zone and on a whistle F1 or F2 will start with a puck.
  • They will carry it up ice 2on1 exchanging passes with each other.
  • After a shot is taken, D1 will stop in front of the net and F1 and F2 will look to turn back up ice towards F3 in the corner.
  • As the shot is happening, F3 in the corner with a puck will begin to leave.
  • D2 and D3 will skate across the ice to prepare for F1, F2, and F3 coming back 3on2.
  • D1 that stopped in front of the net will then turn into a back-checker and chase down the 3on2.
  • After a shot is taken, coach will blow a whistle a new group will go.

Key Points

  • F3 needs to time when he leaves so he is not so far ahead of the play causing F1 and F2 to play catch-up
  • Remind the defenceman about their gaps and taking away passing lanes with an active stick
  • Forwards should look to make passes in the neutral zone rather then having 1 player carry the puck the whole way, encourage puck movement
