Tape-to-tape passes while moving and communicating

Description

  • 4 lines behind each neutral zone faceoff dot with pucks at each of them.
  • Opposite lines will go at the same time. Line 1 and 3 go together and Lines 2 and 4 go together.
  • On the whistle X1 in Line 1 will pass a puck across to O1 in Line 2. X1 will leave and start skating towards Line 2 curling underneath them and continuing up the ice.
  • O1 will then make a return pass to X2 in line 1. As X2 is collecting the pass, he is looking for X1 breaking through the neutral zone and hitting them with a pass.
  • Once X1 has received the pass, they will cut to the middle of the ice and go down for a shot.
  • The same thing is happening the opposite way with X3 from Line 3 colleting the final pass from X4, cutting to the middle of the ice and continuing for a shot at the other end.
  • After both shots have been taken, the coach will blow the whistle again and the other 2 lines will go.

Key Points

  • The player making the first pass needs to make sure they are timing their skate up the ice, you don't want to be too far ahead.
  • Passes need to be tape to tape.
  • Encourage players to take strides while passing and not to stand still moving the puck.
  • Should be lots of communication between players.
