Drill of the Week: Out of the Corner

Encourage forwards to protect the puck by gaining body position

Description

  • F will line up at the hashmark with the D lining up just inside of them.
  • 1 F and 1 D will start low in the corner with the F facing the boards and the D on his back.
  • The first F in line will put a puck down the boards to the F in the drill.
  • Once collecting the puck on the wall, the will work to get to the net by driving up the wall and creating contact with the D before turning back down the wall driving to the net. 
  • The F should cut through the D hands to create space for a shot on net.
  • As the D, try to contain the F on the wall.  You want to keep them in front of you while leading them with your stick.
  • Switch sides to have player get reps going in the either direction.

Key Points

  • Remind forwards to continue moving their feet and crossing over.
  • The defenceman are containing the forward in the drill not trying to takeaway the puck.
  • Encourage forwards to protect the puck by gaining body position.
  • This drill can be completed in one end, alternating sides or completed it out of opposite ends.
