Small area game focuses on puck battles

Description

  • Both nets positioned at the bottom of the faceoff circle facing the corner.
  • 1 coach with each group with pucks.
  • 2 lines of skaters on either side of the net.
  • Coaches will float a puck into the corner and call out a number. The number called is the amount of skaters that will leave each line (i.e. if the coach yells "two", two skaters from each line will leave.).
  • Players will battle for the puck in a small area and work for a shot. After a shot is taken the drill is done and skaters exit for the next group.
  • Coaches can put another puck in if the rep time was short, puck goes out of the area or a goal was scored quickly.

Key Points

  • Goalies need to be quick and control rebounds with all play happening on net front.
  • Ensure correct body position is being focused on during the drill
  • Talk to players about not looking for the perfect play
  • Communication with teammates in battle
