Goalies need to quickly transition out of their crease

Description

  • 2 coaches on opposite boards at center ice with pucks.
  • D and F split with 4 lines on the blue line
  • At the same time going both ways, a coach will dump a puck in.
  • G at either end will need to come out of their crease and stop the puck.
  • At the same time a D will drop down the wall to be an outlet pass for the G.
  • G will make a pass to the D and return to their crease and set up for a zone entry.
  • While this is happening 1 F from each line is curling low and and supporting the puck before getting a pass from that D and heading up ice.
  • F will skate up to the second pilon at center and turn towards the wall coming back towards the net.
  • D will skate up to the first pilon to close the gap and pivot towards the middle of the ice skating backwards towards the net 1 on 1 with the F.
  • After a shot is taken or the D has stopped the F the drill is done and a new whistle will begin the next rep.

Key Points

  • Goalies need to quickly transition out of their crease and stop the puck on the wall behind their net.
  • Defencemen need to turn towards center at the pilon with instills the habit of taking away the middle of the ice.
  • Forwards must curl low before receiving the pass from the defenceman, the pass shouldn't be a long one.
  • Emphasize the importance of driving wide to the net for the forwards, have them work on puck protection and getting to the net.
