Forwards need to react to where the defenceman is going for breakout pass

Description

  • This drill can be done on both halves of the ice at the same time.
  • F and F will start up on either end of the blue line with one D starting just below the blue line in the middle of the ice facing the © at center.
  • F is a forechecker.
  • The © will start the drill by floating a puck just passed the D.
  • The D will skate backwards then pivot to recover the puck.
  • Using the net as a shield, the D will take the puck back as F forces the D whichever way they choose.  The D must read where F is coming from and use the net to create space for a breakout pass.
  • As D is retrieving the puck, F and F re coming into the zone reading where their D is going.
  • After the D has avoided F they will make a breakout pass to either F and F .
  • After this pass is made F can hop out of the drill.
  • F and F will bring the puck up ice outside of the zone to regroup with each other. As this is happening the D is coming up ice to close the gap on the forwards and play them back towards the net on a 2-on-1.
@icehockeysystems_com Use The Net 2 vs 1 Drill from @hockeythinktank! An excellent hockey drill that allows players to practice puck retrievals, using the net, angling, breakouts, and 2 on 1 rushes. #hockeydrill #hockeydrills #hockeydrillsandskills #hockeyislife #hockey #hockeycoach #hockeycoaches ♬ original sound - IceHockeySystems.com

Key Points

  • Defenceman must do shoulder checks when picking up the loose puck to track the forechecker
  • Forwards need to be reacting to where the defenceman is going for a breakout pass
  • Getting up the ice quick as the defenceman will help maintain a healthy gap between the forwards and net
  • All passes should be tape to tape
