Helps mimic breakout/re-group situations for games

Description

  • Players make 4 lines on the blue lines with pucks in every line.
  • On a whistle opposite lines will begin.
  • X1 and O1 will skate towards the middle of the ice, pivot to open up and receive passes from their respective lines.
  • X2 and O2 will pass to X1 and O1 and receive it right back.
  • X1 and O1 will then pivot again to open up and move toward the lines in front of them.
  • They will get a second pass from the first player in that line and again bump it right back.
  • X1 and O1 will then turn back up the boards towards the lines they started in.
  • They will cut across the blue line working to stay onside, and receive a stretch pass from the opposite line.
  • X2 will be passing to O1 and O2 passing to X1
  • Both players will continue to the goal after receiving the passes and take a shot on net.
  • On the next whistle the other 2 lines will go and and the drill starts again the other way.

Key Points

  • Drill helps mimic breakout/re-group situations for games
  • Awareness of who you are passing to and when will be critical for this drill
  • Players should make sure they are opening up to the play to not turn their back to the puck
  • Calling for passes will build good habits for games
  • Stay on top of players coming across the blue line to make sure they are staying onside while the pass is coming
  • Stretch passes should be in front of the skater leading, encourage players passing to lead their targets
