Drill emphasizes body position, puck battles and quick decision making

Description

  • The drill starts with two offensive players from each line in front of their net and two players from either team behind the net of the offensive zone. The coach will dump a puck in to start the game.
  • The team that wins possession of the puck will work to create odd man situations and isolate the defenders to create time and space for a shot on net. Any player has the ability to shoot on net and can only do so after at least two (2) successful passes.
  • Only the net front players will move from offence to defense (O1, O2, X1 and X2). The support players (O3, O4, X3 and X4) will remain in the offensive zone at all times beside the net or below the goal line.
  • If the goalie covers the puck or a goal is scored the coach will dump a new puck in. If a rebound occurs, the net front players will battle for possession continuing play. At the end of a shift O3, O4, X3 and X4 will become the net front players and two teammates from each team will enter the zone as support players.
  • Be sure to rotate players through all positions and keep shifts to 30-45 seconds.

Key Points

This drill focuses on shooting skills and offensive and defensive net-front play. This drill emphasizes body position, puck battles, quick decision making and the importance of supporting the puck in and out of possession.
