Kaiden Harmon scored the golden goal in the third overtime period to break a scoreless tie and help the Peterborough Minor Petes earn #RedHats at the OMHA U16 AAA Championships presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario over the Southern Tier Admirals.

The two teams tied 1-1 in group play, with the Petes finishing at the top of their group and beating the York-Simcoe Express in the semi-finals. The first set #RedHats from this season were crowned at Joshua's Creek Arenas in Oakville in front of a packed rink.

“It’s a set play, and (Josh) Avery took it behind the net, I started calling for it to pass it behind them and I just went to go put it in the net and it just went in,” said Harmon of his game winner.

“The Admirals are one of the most disciplined, structured teams there is. We knew it would be very difficult to beat them,” said Minor Petes head coach Mike Farrugia. “They were just unbelievable, it could of went either way. Luckily for us, it came our way.”

In the group stages, Halton Hurricanes forwards Will Derbyshire, Nolan Keeler and Brady Smith finished tied for the Championships scoring lead with six points a piece in the group stage. Harmon led all Petes scorers and Easton Lynds led the Admirals.

This is the Petes first #RedHats at the U16 AAA group since 2008.

“Growing up in Peterborough, always wanting to get that done in AAA, it just means the world, it’s crazy, it’s unbelievable,” said Minor Petes forward Will McFadden.

This was the first of four weekends of OMHA Championships presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario. The next three weeks will see 44 more Champions crowned at events in Barrie, Whitby, Kingston, Halton and Windsor, as well as back in Oakville across the U10 to U21 age groups and AAA to Tier 3 divisions.
