U16 and U18 AAA Top 5 Rankings presented by Hudl

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association has released the fifth edition of the U16 and U18 AAA Top 5 Rankings presented by Hudl for the 2021-2022 regular season. These rankings will be released on a bi-weekly schedule.

As teams play to clinch their spot in OMHA Championships the heat turns up in the final weeks of the regular season.

U16 AAA Rankings

The top three teams hold strong while the Hurricanes ride a three game winning streak to jump over the Raiders.

Players to Watch

Nathan Schaap (North Central Predators): A defender that uses his size and strength to his advantage. Defensively he is aggressive at his blueline, stepping up against rushers and angling them against boards well. When Schaap gets the puck on his stick, he makes a hard first pass to get pucks up ice quickly and follows up the play well. Inside the offensive blueline defenders have to be aware to close shooting lanes as his shot is heavy and finds the net often, leading to a lot of goals or rebounds for his forwards to attack.

Ben Hrebik (Halton Hurricanes): A goalie with good size and positioning. Hrebik can track pucks well so that he gets his feet set early and square so he give shooters little net to aim for. His eyes look pucks into his body and this allows him to control most shots and limit rebounds. If an odd puck does get away, his quickness and athleticism allows him to scramble well and get post to post to make a big save. Hrebik plays in big minutes and is a key contributor to his teams success this year.

U18 AAA Rankings

The Eagles use their three game winning streak to jump up a spot in the Top 5 while the Raiders remain in the number one seed.

Players to Watch

Nolan Ling (Oshawa Generals): An elite level defenceman who uses his tremendous skating ability to defend his zone and initiate transition also uses great stick skills to create turnovers. An above average physical game with a touch of nasty to be an elite defender. Offensively,Ling distributes the puck with precision and is an offensive threat with his ability to get pucks through to the net from the point. Look for this late bloomer to be selected in this year‘s OHL U18 draft.

Madden McDougall (Guelph Jr. Gryphons): Don’t let McDougall’s size fool you. He is an offensively gifted player who is physical and tenacious in a compact frame. This dynamic winger uses his incredible speed to create numerous offensive chances for him and his linemates. His laser shot and quick release has placed McDougall near the top of the league scoring race all season. Defensively, his positioning and work ethic pressures opponents with the puck and creates turnovers for his team. With all the skills, he will be a highly recruited U18 after this season.
