OMHA U16 AAA Showcase presented by Hudl

The great ones that grew up playing Ontario Minor Hockey Association have taken their places at the next level of hockey. Now, the next wave of talent will take to the ice at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s U16 AAA Showcase presented by Hudl in Oakville on December 3-5.

There will be 22 Ontario Minor Hockey Association U16 AAA teams battling head-to-head in a series of games in front of hundreds of pro, junior and university scouts at Joshua’s Creek Arenas. This is one of the few times a year that all of the OMHA teams will be under one roof competing at the same time. This will be an action-packed weekend with high quality U16 AAA hockey. These players are some of the best that the OMHA has to offer.

There will be live-streaming available of each game on the OMHA website brought to you by GameOnStream. You can sign up to watch both the ETA and SCTA games through GameOnStream to view all OMHA Showcase, regular season and playoff games live and on demand. *Note: Those with a current subscription will already have access to the OMHA Showcase games.

A list of players to watch from each team as well as the rosters for the ETA vs. SCTA U18 All-Star Game are listed below.

The event is a preview of the top picks in next spring’s Ontario Hockey League draft and, in a few short years, the National Hockey League draft. The OMHA is a premier development league with 80 players drafted from 19 different teams at the 2021 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, including six first round picks.

The participating clubs are the Ajax-Pickering Raiders, Barrie Jr. Colts, Brampton 45's, Burlington Eagles, Central Ontario Wolves, Clarington Toros, Grey-Bruce Highlanders, Guelph Jr. Gryphons, Halton Hurricanes, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs, Kingston Jr. Gaels, Markham Waxers, Niagara North Stars, North Central Predators, Oakville Rangers, Oshawa Generals, Peterborough Minor Petes, Quinte Red Devils, Richmond Hill Coyotes, Southern Tier Admirals, Whitby Wildcats and the York-Simcoe Express.

“The Ontario Minor Hockey Association has a long and proud tradition of developing some of the top hockey talent in the world,” said OMHA Executive Director Ian Taylor. “This event will be a step in identifying and developing the next crop of elite players in Ontario.”

The OMHA’s Showcase is also used to promote a path to post-secondary education for the athletes. Many OMHA graduates move on to attend and play at Ontario universities.

Partners for the OMHA AAA Showcase include presenting sponsor Hud, along with BioSteel, GameOnStream, and the Ontario Hockey League.

Players to Watch

Be prepared to be frustrated if you are a shooter. Rye has excellent angles and gets square to the puck quickly. He can do this as he has good scans and tracks the puck well. On top of this, Rye also smothers rebounds in his chest and pads well that limits second chances. With Rye in net he will always give the Raiders a chance for a win.

A steady defenceman that will be used in big situations. Dirracolo has good size and an active stick that makes him tough to beat 1-on-1 and out of the corner. He relies on his footwork to close down time and space on forwards so that he can force them into a bad decision. He is efficient with his retrievals and first pass, minimizing the time spent in his own zone.

Energizes his team as he constantly moves his feet and can make you pay for any mistakes. Has a lower centre of gravity and uses this to get under sticks or through hands so he can separate pucks from opposing players sticks. Dekay also loves to turn on attack mode where he will drive the net, or make a skilled play to find a shooting lane. He is excellent at finding loose pucks or pouncing on rebounds.

A defender with a nice stride and good edges that he uses to skate pucks up the ice or to evade a forecheck. Rarely does Gill force any pucks when pressured, rather he will curl off his pressure to find a passing option or skate out of trouble. Inside the offensive zone, he finds lanes to exploit so he can be an option for his forwards and utilize his shot to score or create rebounds.

Maximizes his effort and his speed so he can constantly be an effective player on the ice. He has a great engine and moves his feet throughout his shift. Including his agility and ability to find open space, he can buy time and find open teammates for chances. Away from the puck Johnston tracks hard and can be sneaky with his stick, creating transition opportunities.

A player who loves having the puck on his stick. He seems to find open space well and time his skating so that he is involved in the play and has a lot of puck touches. He likes to quickly strike off the rush and has quick hands to make plays through defender’s sticks and feet. Therrien is tough to contain around the net as he effectively gets underneath defenders creating opportunities where he can then show his goal scoring ability around the net.

Will be a key member for Grey-Bruce this year. Stanley has good instincts with and without the puck in the offensive zone. He showed some finish and playmaking ability around the net and will be relied upon to be a full 200-foot player.

A hardworking forward that is strong in corners and will win a lot of puck battles with his determination. His team feeds off his effort and there is no doubt why he wears the ‘C’.  Wood has shown a good ability to get off the walls and attack inside the dots where he can tally some goals if he is given some time to shoot.

An opposing presence for any team that has to play against him. McKenzie is very strong on his skates and uses his power and quick bursts to get a step on defensemen or pounce on loose pucks. Very strong along the boards where he often wins battles and gains possession. With the puck he has excellent instincts to find open teammates or use his heavy shot to get pucks on net and often putting pucks in the net. He drives a lot of positive play for his team and his line.

A handful for defenders as he is a player with size and can get up to top speed quickly. Rusell has a good first stride where he can get a step on defenders and can lead a rush. He is comfortable with the puck on his stick and has good IQ and playmaking ability. When things slow down in the offensive zone, Russell can play a heavy game where he can finish checks or be a net front presence.

Given any time and space in the offensive zone, Elkins can make you pay.  A player with a heavy shot and a quick release. He knows how to pull pucks into his feet to change the angle of his shot, making it tough for goalies to properly set their angles. He knows how to skate into the soft areas so that his teammates can find him.

A taller forward with a long stride and a strong stick. Aspinall uses this to his advantage as he can set a wide stance to shield off defenders when attacking. In the offensive zone he can circle on the outside to find open teammates or drive the net. When he doesn’t have the puck, Aspinall puts himself in smart positions to find loose pucks and finish around the net and will generate a lot of offence for his team this year.

Sets the pace when he is on the ice. Testa loves to attack with speed and he puts defenceman on edge as he can go wide and drive the net, or cut into the middle to use his shot. He gets a lot of pucks on net as he knows his shot is an asset where he can score from distance and while in stride. Without the puck he tracks well and anticipates to create a lot of turnovers whereby he can quickly transition back to offence.

Sees the ice very well and is an equally dangerous set-up man as he is a shooter. Procyszyn is a tall player that uses his reach and puck protection skills to his advantage. This allows him to buy extra time where he then uses his vision to find shooting and passing lanes. He has a very good touch with the puck and can corral bad passes well, without losing his stride. He uses his instincts to find soft areas and slip behind defenders where he can load up for a shot or gain an advantage to win loose pucks.

The puck seems to follow Godard in the offensive zone. He shows good patience and IQ to allow plays to develop and will rely on his passing and playmaking ability to create scoring chances. This skillset is also effective when he is on the powerplay and he will help Oakville create offence throughout the year.

This defenceman is an efficient puck mover that adapts to what is given. Watt relies on his feet and decision making to get pucks out of his defensive zone efficiently. When under pressure, he rarely forces a pass, but instead can elude by curling off his check and skate the puck out of trouble. With time, he scans and makes a good decision on his outlets he allows his team to breakout where he can then join the rush as a high option.

Big and strong and a handful for defenders when he has the puck. Morden has a strong base and can take contact while still maintaining puck control. When the play sets up in the offensive zone, Morden can be an effective net front presence, where he can create scoring chances through tips, screens and rebounds. Away from the net, his shot is hard and he can score from distance.

Used in every situation, Danford will be a minute muncher for Quinte this year. An effective skater with the puck and when defending off the rush, he can control the play when he is on the ice. He can quickly skate out of trouble or lead an attack.  Inside the offensive zone, he is constantly moving his feet, changing angles for his passes and shots. This keeps the opposing team off balance and in turn creates many offensive opportunities for his team.

A defender that checks a lot of boxes. He has excellent size, a long active stick, smooth feet and comfort when the puck is on his stick. Bedowski starts a lot of plays from his own defensive zone where he can swallow up forwards with his wingspan and ability to take away their time. When he does disrupt pucks, he can quickly think offense and make a smart first pass up the ice and jump into a rush to be a high option. Richmond Hill will lean on him a lot this year and he will be a driving force for their success.

Can adapt his game well to the situation at hand. He can be defensive minded and positional when needed, but also switch on his offensive instincts to lead an attack. He has smooth hands in tight areas and can thread some passes through some tight windows. Bisson thinks outside of the box well, using indirect passes or quick 1-touch plays to open up some ice for his teammates.

A strong two-way player that shows responsibility in all three zones. Korry positions himself well where he comes low and helps his defense out so they can effectively breakout. Without the puck, he tracks hard from behind where he can pressure players into bad decisions or utilize smart stick lifts to transition. When he has the puck on his stick, Korry knows how to get pucks to the net by driving it or using his playmaking ability to set up his teammates.

Has an ability to be a gamebreaker as he has an excellent shot. Vasic has shown he can attack down the wing and shoot while in stride. His shot is hard and accurate and he knows how to use defenders as a partial screen. Without the puck, his relies on his instincts to position himself in smart areas or to get pucks in stride.
