In 2016, Canada sent 316 athletes to the Summer Olympics. 59% of those athletes were women and they brought home 87% of the medals. Yet, girls are quitting sport in huge numbers.

In partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart, the Coaching Association of Canada, and the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport, Respect Group has created the Keeping Girls in Sport program.

Keeping Girls in Sport was created to help everyone who coaches girls, even parents, understand how girls develop physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. When we understand how and why girls play we can help every young athlete stay in sport, reach their potential, and remain active long after the competitions end. Finally becoming the next generation of inspiring female coaches and role models.

“Gender equity in sport has come a long way since I first started playing hockey, but it still has a long way to go. Coaches play a vital role in this, and continuing to educate themselves through Keeping Girls in Sport is a valuable step in levelling the playing field,” said Order of Canada Recipient and Five-Time Olympic Medallist Hayley Wickenheiser.

The program features modules, programs and resources for coaches and administrators to Keep Girls in Sport. There are three key themes to creating a healthy culture and encouraging engagement - social connection, skill acquisition and role models.
