Ever wonder if your child or your players are on track in their hockey development? Consider this a progress report.

The Hockey Canada Core Skills checklist can be viewed as a curriculum of what age-appropriate lessons players should be learning at their stage of development. Just like in school, students are taught knowledge that creates a basis as they move forward. For example, students shouldn't be learning algebra in Grade 3. Parents and coaches can keep track of what skills are being taught during this hockey season and ensure they line up with the program. It is the basis for creating lesson plans.

These charts are designed for players to learn the proper skills for their age. It helps them learn the foundational techniques for skill-building as they grow older.

Associations and Coaches that want to track player development can use an online player evaluation platform like TeamGenius to evaluate players during the season and easily share skill progression with players and parents. The process is simple - the Association sets up an evaluation for Coaches to fill out through the TeamGenius mobile app. After an evaluation, the Association can share this information with players and parents in a digital report card. After a few evaluations, you will start to track how each player is improving in their skill development.

Below is a link to each age group’s Core Skills chart.
