The Developing Defencemen Clinic is part of the Instructional Coaching Stream of the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP)

The clinic is designed to teach coaches how to identify the specific skills that are needed to develop defencemen.  The ability to contribute offensively and defensively is the foundation for all defensemen. A defenseman’s overall ability is directly related to their performance in skating, puck control, shooting, and checking. This fundamental connection between a defenseman's overall ability and their individual skills means coaches need to create development plans for their defensemen and dedicate adequate time to the instruction of defense specific skills in practices.

Throughout the session, coaches will review the following topics:

  • Skating Concepts
  • Breakouts
  • Regroup
  • Neutral / Offensive / Defensive Zone Play
  • Transitions
  • Shooting

Each attendee will be given credit for Developing Defencemen Level 1, which includes 5 PD points.
