Summer Olympians Who Played Minor Hockey

Looking at multi-sport athletes representing Canada

This week would've marked the kickoff of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It's always exciting to see the best athletes in the world compete and represent Canada on an international stage.

With the warm weather outside, kids are encouraged to play tennis, basketball and other activities in a safe, socially distanced manner. You never know what skills you might pick up. To celebrate this week we are going to look back at some Olympians from the most recent Summer and Winter Games who excelled in multiple sports.

Name: Derek Drouin
Hometown: Corunna
OMHA Team: Mooretown (Rep, 2004-08)
Recent Olympics: 2016 Rio - Athletics (High Jump) - GOLD

Drouin: Hockey has 'built me into the person I am today'

One of Canada's most decorated active Olympians in athletics, Drouin captured gold in 2016, improving on his bronze medal performance. He also finished first at the 2015 Pan Am Games and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Drouin had won his fifth NCAA high jump title, a record, while at  Indiana University, earning the school's Best Individual Performance of the Year and the Male Athlete of the Year award in 2013.

Name: Anthony Romaniw
Hometown: Hamilton
OMHA Team: Hamilton Bulldogs (AAA, 2006-07)
Recent Olympics: 2016 Rio - Athletics (800m) - 6th in Heat

The 28-year-old Romaniw graduated from the University of Guelph after a transfer from Dartmouth College. He won multiple CIS medals and also represented Canada at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Name: Ben Donnelly
Hometown: Oshawa
Recent Olympics: 2018 PyeongChang - Speed Skating - Long Track (Team Pursuit) - 7th
2018 PyeongChang - Speed Skating - Long Track 1500m - 31st

Donnelly played minor hockey for four years. He was recently named Speed Skating Canada’s Rising Star of the Year for long track. He is the holder of several junior national records and also owns a World Cup gold medal in the team pursuit.

Name: Matthew Hughes
Hometown: Oshawa
OMHA Team: Oshawa-Nasc (House League, 2004-07)
Recent Olympics: 2016 Rio - Athletics (3000m Steeplechase - 10th

Hughes set a new Canadian 3000m steeplechase record at the 2013 IAAF World Championships with a time of 8:11:64, topping a mark set in 1985. The Oshawa native won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. He is the University of Louisville's first outdoor track and field champion, winning twice. Hughes won Canadian titles from 2013-15.

Name: Cam Stones
Hometown: Whitby
Recent Olympics: 2018 PyeongChang - Bobsleigh (Four-Man) - 12th

Stones started off as a rugby player before transitioning over to bobsleigh at 22 years old. He had three top-10 finishes during the World Cup season. Stones graduated from McMaster University in 2015 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
