Having a powerful slapshot is something every player should have in their back pocket. It is a combination of strength, power and accuracy that when done correctly can leave goalies looking for the puck in the back of their net.
Timing and proper technique are the foundation of mastering a powerful slapshot. The hands are spaced wider on the stick than normal stickhandling grip. The puck is close to the body and centre between the legs. Transfer the weight from the back leg to the stick to the front leg. Wrists are locked and held firmly as the stick comes into contact with the ice slightly behind the puck. The follow-through will dictate the height and accuracy of the shot.
Those learning the slapshot may fan on the shot or not get enough power behind it as they start to become more comfortable with the technique. Like any skill-building exercise, don't get discouraged if it takes a few reps to see results!
Slapshots are valuable for players looking to add a one-timer to their arsenal. It takes a great deal of hand-eye coordination and timing to pull off but can leave defenders out of position.
The OMHA Players Club presented by HockeyShot is comprised of three different challenges that each aim to improve a different hockey skill. The 5000 Puck, 10,000 Touches and the 30/30 Challenge offer unique activities and exercises that will grow and develop the game of a player through fun and repetitive drills. Areas like balance, agility, stick handling, shot accuracy and shot power can all be developed and improved through the OMHA Players Club.
Each challenge has a downloadable tracking sheet where players can chart their progress. There are suggested guidelines for how long it will take to complete each challenge but players can work at their own pace.
