The Ontario Minor Hockey Association has released the second edition of the Minor Midget and Midget AAA Top 5 Rankings powered by Under Armour for the 2019-2020 regular season. These rankings will be released on a bi-weekly schedule.

With a new season now kicking off, here's where teams stand after the opening weeks of play.

Minor Midget AAA Rankings

The top teams continue to roll and are beginning to create an early distance in the standings. Every team is trying to find their groove and there is still plenty of season left for teams to climb their way to the top.

Players to Watch

Ryan Struthers (Oakville Rangers) - Struthers is an intelligent forward who can be relied upon to make the right play. He has high hockey IQ, allowing him to read and react well in all three zones. In the defensive zone he comes deep and helps out his defencemen making himself a constant option. When he gets the puck he can use his skating to carve through the neutral zone to get numerous zone entries. Inside the offensive zone, Stuthers keeps defenders off balance as he can use his vision to find his teammates or use his strength to take pucks to the net. He will continue to be a handful for opposing teams and a great leader for his team going forward.

Nolan Lalonde (Kingston Jr. Frontenacs) - A big, square goaltender that uses great positioning to make the most of his size. Shooters have limited space to find a hole and will also have to combat fluid movements that allow him to react efficiently to shots on net. Often, there won't be a second chance as Lalonde is very good at swallowing rebounds or kicking them to the corners. The netminder has a calmness to him that will allow him to reset and refocus quickly, which keeps him ready and his team in a lot of games.

Midget AAA Rankings

With every team now having a few games under their belts it's clear it's going to be a very tight competition in Midget hockey once again. Many of the pre-season favourites have realized it won't be an easy walk in the park as there are many teams putting their name in as the top in this age group.

Players to Watch

Michael Simpson (Peterborough Minor Petes) - Big, competitive and athletic are some words that you can use to describe the Peterborough goaltender. A big part of the early season success for the Petes, the 6’1" goalie is off to a great start this season allowing just two goals in his first three games including a shutout. Simpson does a great job of tracking pucks through traffic, and has been able to make the timely save when needed. With Simpson between the pipes, the Petes will always have a chance to win.

Owen Johnston (Burlington Eagles) - The Eagles are off to a great start this season and Johnston has been a large part of it. The forward has speed to burn, and has the skill set to be able to make the most of his opportunities when he gets a scoring chance. What makes him especially dangerous is that he can create offence both off the rush, as well as below the dots. With seven points in his first five games, look for Johnston to continue to be an impact player for the Eagles each and every night.
