Hockey Canada has invited over 150 players to its Summer Showcase, a series of development and selection camps to select teams for three upcoming tournaments. The 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the Hlinka Gretzky Cup rosters will be comprised of players from these invitees.
Later this month players will head to Calgary for the U17 and U18 camps at Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.
There are 20 OMHA grads featured on the development camp rosters.
“The national under-17 development camp is the first step these athletes take in their Team Canada career,” said Shawn Bullock, director of men’s national teams. “Ultimately, these players will learn what it takes to wear the Maple Leaf in international competition. We are here to support their development by providing the on- and off-ice experiences they need to achieve the dream of representing their country.”
Following camp, players will be monitored through the early weeks of the 2019-20 season before 66 are named to one of three Canadian teams - Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red and Team Canada White - competing at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, scheduled for Nov. 2-9 in Medicine Hat, Alta., and Swift Current, Sask.

“We are excited to bring together a group of 44 athletes with a solid foundation of junior and international experience for selection camp. The under-18 camp is unlike any other, as players are being evaluated from the moment they arrive at camp and are preparing to compete in short-term competition,” said Shawn Bullock, director of men’s national teams for Hockey Canada.
One of the only true, best-on-best competitions for this age group, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup will see Team Canada play its preliminary-round games at Ice Bors Arena in Breclav, Czech Republic. The event will run from Aug. 5-10, with Canada facing off against the Czech Republic, Finland and Switzerland in prelim play before the tournament wraps up with the bronze and gold medal games on Aug. 10. Canada is the defending champion and has won gold 22 times in 28 years of summer under-18 competition, along with two silver medals and one bronze.
