Schomberg's Larry Gould awarded Hockey Canada's Most Outstanding Volunteer

A passionate volunteer for over five decades, Larry Gould was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award from Hockey Canada in recognition of his dedication to the game of hockey.

Like any kid, Gould started as a minor hockey player in Beeton and that grew into a lifelong love of the sport. He began coaching in Schomberg and has since been behind the bench of nearly every age, league and division in the association. He’s coached local league for the last 15 years. When you’ve been volunteering for as long as Gould you end up coaching generations of families.

Over the last 10 seasons, Gould has decided to have at least two new volunteers on his bench staff to share his knowledge with in hopes that they will carry on his wealth of experience. His goal is to get others as hooked to volunteering as he is, which he says keeps the community going. Earlier this season, Schomberg Minor Hockey surprised Gould with a banner raising ceremony that hung his name in the rafters of the Trisan Centre.

Gould was previously recognized as the 2015 OMHA Honour Award winner as well as the 2016 OHF Volunteer of the Year. His daughter helped the push for him to be given a Governor General’s Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. Gould was also highlighted during OMHA Thank a Volunteer Week.

He would be the first to tell you that he isn’t in it for the recognition but rather just to see the smiling faces on the ice. He never envisioned his time giving back to the sport lasting this long but still finds joy in seeing players build their skills over the year.

For now, Gould remains a convenor for the area but says if the phone started ringing again he would answer the call.
