Deserving volunteers recognized for outstanding contributions

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association presented its awards at the Annual General Meeting held at the Sheraton Parkway Hotel in Richmond Hill on June 7th to recognize the outstanding achievements of its athletes and volunteers. The OMHA recognizes excellence in various areas of minor hockey with five distinctive awards.

OMHA Honour and Excellence in Development Awards

Wendy White of Newmarket Minor Hockey is the recipient of both the OMHA Honour and OMHA Excellence in Development Awards. She dedicated decades of work to minor hockey in many volunteer and development roles. Wendy would always greet everyone at the arena and loved working with the referees and the Silver Stick tournament.

The OMHA Honour Award is a prestigious award presented to a person who has made an outstanding voluntary contribution to minor hockey for a considerable period of time and the OMHA Excellence in Development Award was established to recognize and honour an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to hockey development programming in minor hockey.

Wally Scott Bursary

The Wally Scott Bursary is presented in recognition of outstanding commitment to community service, athletics and academics. This bursary reflects the achievements of a young hockey player who is committed to his or her community, athletic ability and academic achievement. Recipients receive an award towards their post-secondary education.

There are two recipients this year – Jack Viney (Aurora) and Celina Seguin (LaSalle). Both maintained a high academic standing throughout their high school education. For their post-secondary education, Jack will be studying mathematics and Celina will be studying English.

Patricia Hartley Administrators Award

The Patricia Hartley Administrators Award is presented in recognition of exemplary service in the field of sports administration. This award reflects the achievements of a local executive board member or volunteer staff person towards the efficient operations of an association and the betterment of hockey. The recipient of this award is selected for outstanding leadership within their own association, commitment to their organization and overall involvement in minor hockey.

The recipient of this year's award is Colleen McGiniss of the Elmvale Minor Hockey Association. She has been involved with registration for 11 years and doesn’t hesitate to put in any of the extra time necessary for her role.
