Players who are looking to add another weapon to their stickhandling arsenal can practice with the Toe Drag Drill from the 10,000 Touches Challenge. Part of the OMHA Players Club presented by HockeyShot, the drill uses repetitive, meaningful motions to help players improve in this area of the game.

The Toe Drag is a great skill where you show the defender the puck and quickly take it away. Move the ball away from the body, extending the hands and then pull the ball towards the body sliding the hands apart. Repeat this motion to the front and side of your body. Allow the stick to slide through your bottom hand while the top hand performs a ‘push-pull’ motion. The drill is divided into four parts, each providing a unique spin on the skill.

All that players need to complete the drill are a stick, gloves, a ball/puck and a place to practice! Other suggested items are extra pucks and sticks and an attack triangle. From there, simply watch the video and tracking your progress on the challenge tracking sheet. Be creative in what you use if you don’t have all the suggested items.

Attack Triangle
The attack triangle simulates the defender’s extended stick. In this drill, move the ball laterally under the stick and then use the toe to drag the ball around the extended stick. Through, through and around. If you do not have an attack triangle you can balance a stick on a slightly elevated object that still give you room to handle the puck around it.

Moving
In the Moving drill, set up a series of pucks in a straight line two feet apart from each other. Push the ball away from the body and pull the ball using the toe of your blade back towards the body. The top hand pulls the stick through the bottom hand.

Chip Over Stick
Place a stick flat on the ground. This drill focuses on soft hands, quick touches and angling the blade of the stick to lift the ball over the stick on the ground.

Transition Sticks
This drill provides a variety of puck control movements. A player can weave around the sticks, transition and pivot around them, or chip over the sticks. The key is to perform the moves at speed while maintaining control.
