Hockey Gives Back stories from across the province presented by Dodge

Even though the season is entering the final stretch, many OMHA teams have still found time to gave back to their communities through ways like food drives and donations. The OMHA is so proud of the efforts of all of our teams for knowing the values of respect and community.

Here are some of the submissions we have received over the last few weeks.

Volunteering Time

The Richmond Hill Stars Atom AE team spent time volunteering at the local food bank as a way of giving back to those in need. The players sorted and stocked the shelves with the canned goods that they had collected and donated, helping to feed families and children.

The Atom AE team not only used this opportunity to give back to the community, but collectively they made a difference in the lives of the people who will benefit from their volunteer experience. The Stars used hockey as an important lesson about being thankful for what they have.

The Orillia Terriers Minor Peewee A team won Scotiabank's Hockey Day in Canada contest, earning them a trip to Corner Brook, Newfoundland for the festivities. The Terriers raised money for a young child in their area by dedicating 40 hours a week to help out around the house or in their neighborhood.

Donations

Graham McWaters has spent parts of the last four years collecting new and used hockey equipment to donate to the Beausoleil First Nation group on Christian Island. His last donation brought in over 50 bags of equipment for the local hockey tournament on the island and the initiative has grown to other First Nations groups as well. There has been an overwhelming amount of positive feedback and McWaters looks to continue collecting equipment for the next donation run.

The Clarington Toros Minor Bantam A team made Christmas a little brighter for a local family this year. Most of the money that the group generously donated was raised themselves, with their parents following their sons’ lead making a charitable contribution as well. The Toros wrapped the gifts before giving the presents to the family in need.

The Milton Winterhawks Minor Peewee AE Blue team held a charity fundraiser for Tourette Canada, an organization providing support to individuals with Tourette's Syndrome and their families. The team hosted a private screening of the hockey film The Rocket and held a silent auction. The event attracted 130 people and raised just over $3,000 for Tourette Canada, as part of the team's annual strategy to give back to the community.

Teams from across Glanbrook Minor Hockey raised $16,112.67 for the McMaster Children Hospital Foundation. All the funds collected went to support Mackids, which services the children in the community. Fundraising efforts included bake sales, BBQs, raffle prizes, among many others.

The Markham Waxers Peewee AE White team participated in the Love Box project for Markham Stouffville Hospital. Every child admitted to the Children's Health Unit at the hospital receives a Love Box that has been put together by members of the local community. Each box is one of a kind and is filled with items to comfort children and their families who are facing all types of health issues. This year, the players pledged to fill one box as a family and encouraged extended family and friends to fill boxes of their own.
