A new development camp is being offered in the OHF to introduce young goaltenders to the skills, concepts and techniques of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence Goaltending Program.

In partnership with Hockey Canada and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the OHF will host one camp in April for up to 36, 2004-born male goaltenders. These U14 goaltenders will be under the instruction and leadership of goaltending experts working with a curriculum from Hockey Canada’s High Performance Goaltending Advisory Group.

The two-day camp will have four on-ice sessions focusing on skating, positioning and skill stations. There will also be three off-ice sessions covering mental preparation, position specific warm-ups and cool-downs and an introduction to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence. Lunch will be provided to participants, along with a jersey and t-shirt.

“Goaltending is such a unique position and requires an equally unique approach in preparing the next wave of high performance athletes,” said Tony Foresi, OHF President. “The OHF is pleased to be part of that evolving approach to goaltenders and I am confident that the experience gained during this camp will help our goalies progress toward their goals.”

The dates are also set for the 11th annual OHF/OHL U15 Program of Excellence Camps. This year, position-specific practices are being introduced, along with new off-ice sessions, helping to ensure players are provided the most up-to-date development strategies.

Hockey Canada established the Program of Excellence to identify the top calibre hockey players in specific age categories and to provide these players with an opportunity to participate against international competition. By participating in the Program of Excellence, players are exposed to high calibre coaching and training methods designed to better prepare our national teams to compete against the top teams in the world.

The goals of the program include: to introduce players, families and staff to high performance hockey, the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence and the Ontario Hockey League; to create a unique and special life and hockey experience for all players and staff involved; and to develop players and staff both on and off the ice.
