Best Minor Midget AAA teams from across Ontario battling for OHL Cup

The annual OHL Cup takes place this week and features 20 of the best Minor Midget AAA teams from across the province. Organized by the Ontario Hockey League, there will be seven teams from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association competing for a gold medal.

Teams from across the OMHA that are playing include the Minor Midget AAA Champion Whitby Wildcats, Quinte Red Devils, Brampton 45’s and Ajax-Pickering Raiders. The York-Simcoe Express, Grey-Bruce Highlanders and Halton Hurricanes will play in wild card games.

To qualify for the tournament, the top four teams from the OMHA Minor Midget AAA Championships automatically earn spots. The fifth place team (Grey-Bruce) earns a wild card spot as does the winner (Halton) of the OMHA-SCTA consolation game. In addition, three wild card teams from across Ontario are determined by a selection committee and York-Simcoe was chosen as one of them.

The Express won the tournament last year in a thrilling double-overtime victory. Since switching to the Minor Midget age group format in 2003, other OMHA teams to capture the OHL Cup include the Oakville Rangers (2013), Markham Waxers (2006) and York-Simcoe (2004). The Richmond Hill Stars took home a silver medal in 2004.

Whitby Wildcats – The Wildcats have been one of the best teams in the OMHA all season long. They are riding momentum after winning #RedHats in the Minor Midget AAA Championships and could take home the OHL Cup as well.

Brampton 45’s – Brampton made a lot of noise and put themselves on the map at the Minor Midget AAA Championships, narrowly losing out in the gold medal game. They are in every game and are tough to contain. The 45’s are using their second place finish as motivation – they have something to prove.

Quinte Red Devils – The bronze medallists were one of the top ranked teams during the year for good reason. This is a strong defensive unit who can light up the lamp too.

Ajax-Pickering Raiders – A few bounces going their way and the Raiders could’ve definitely found themselves in the gold medal game. They battled during the championship weekend and proved that they won’t be pushed around by any team.

York-Simcoe Express – The Express need to shake off the rust from not playing in a few weeks for their winner take all wild card game. This is an offensive powerhouse and it can be tough to keep them in check.

Grey-Bruce Highlanders – The Highlanders caught fire at the end of the season and nearly found themselves in a medal game at the championships. They can hang with any team and can’t be discouraged by playing in a wild card game.

Halton Hurricanes – The Hurricanes earned their wild card spot after a play-in game and need to keep the good times rolling. Halton is a strong defensive group and can lock it down quickly if they get an early lead.
