Stay ahead of the game when competing in Playdowns

The regular season has wrapped up and teams are now competing for spots in Playdowns. It’s the most exciting time of the hockey year and you know that everybody on the ice is giving maximum effort for the shot at winning #RedHats. The excitement can be felt in every arena across the OMHA and it just adds to the atmosphere. Everything that coaches and players have worked on throughout the year is about to be put to the test.

Here are some tips to keep in mind before you hit the ice for Playdowns action:

Limit Distractions

As soon as you find out your Playdowns schedule, plan out your calendar accordingly and ahead of time instead of going day by day. Homework should be done by the time you get to the rink. Try to avoid any conflicts or appointments that may cause you to miss a game or practice.

Fuel Your Body

There are many resources available on OMHA.net that provide quick, easy-to-make, portable recipes that you can take to the rink to ensure your body is properly fueled for game day. Plan out meals and try to eat as healthy as possible. You don’t want to feel sluggish on the ice.

Proper Rest

Getting a good night’s rest is proven to boost performance and focus. Make sure you go to bed at a reasonable time if there is a game the next day. Try to avoid looking at screens before you turn off the lights, instead try to relax by reading a book. You want to feel fresh the next day and be ready to play the best you can.

Push Yourself

If you haven’t already, this is the time to give maximum effort because you never know when your Playdowns will end. Push yourself all the way through. Work hard no matter the situation and build on the intangibles that are part of creating a hockey player.

Keep Emotions Under Control

With the excitement of Playdowns, the emotions on and off the ice can be heightened for all involved. Don’t get caught up in the highs and lows, simply enjoy the moment competing with your friends. The other teams are battling just as hard as you are. Remember, it’s all about respect.

Stick to the Plan

Don’t try to do too much. You’ve gone to practices and learned new skills all year for a reason. Stick with what has been working for your team and don’t try something new. Your team has made it this far because you’ve gelled together and been consistent with the game plan.
