Wayne Gretzky has a lot of stories to tell from his decorated life in hockey.

In his new book 99: Stories of the Game, Gretzky takes us on his hockey journey from past to present, from the first time he laced up his skates to his life now in the hockey world and everything else in between.

Gretzky recounts the times over the years when he met with Phil Esposito, Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau, soaking in advice from the greats of the generation before him. He talks about some of his most famous moments in the sport and his encounters with other hockey legends.

The game has evolved over the decades through rule changes and new approaches to strategy but the players haven’t changed that much according to the Brantford native and OMHA grad. The dedication, passion and will to win is still there in every locker room.

One of the memories Gretzky highlights is the moment he first told someone that he wanted to be an NHL player. He was seven years old and was at Maple Leaf Gardens with his grandmother to watch the Leafs face the Oakland Seals. It was his first ever NHL game and he knew that one day he wanted to play on the ice in that building.

Stories like that and many more are featured in 99: Stories of the Game, available now.
