Use the off-season to catch up on some valuable resources

The summer is the perfect time of the year to wind down and refresh following a busy hockey season. It gives players, coaches and parents a chance to decompress and take hockey off of their minds for a bit before getting ready to do it all over again.

Coaches can use the summer to take a look back at the positive strides the team made throughout the season. Celebrate the improvements of each player and how the team became so much closer by the end of the year. For those looking to bring a new perspective into next season, there are a number of great resources from outside of the sport that can apply to the lessons you teach and the leadership you provide.

One of the great things about the off-season is that you are able to work at your own pace. There are no deadlines or time restrictions that would affect how fast you work. Keeping hockey in your summer plans is completely up to how you are feeling about it.

Here are some coaching books to catch up on in the summer:

The Talent Code: What if there was a secret to unlocking talent? The Talent Code examines why certain geographical hotspots seem to produce high-end talent at a rate that doesn’t fit the size of the population. Certain methods of training and coaching are highlighted.

Leading with the Heart: Coach K's Successful Strategies for Basketball, Business, and Life: When this book was written in 2001, Duke men’s head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) already had three national titles under his belt. Since then, Coach K has added two more championships to his resume and shares lessons about leadership – how you earn it and practice it in your organization.

Championship Team Building: What Every Coach Needs to Know to Build a Motivated, Committed & Cohesive Team: This book provides innovative coaching ideas specifically related to team building and teamwork. Author Jeff Janssen has worked with over 200 NCAA schools and provides dozens of strategies to create cohesive teams.

The Hockey Coaching Bible: With stories and tips from over 15 coaches from across varying levels of hockey, this book gives insight on how lessons taught in minor hockey can apply all the way up to the professional level. Each coach brings a unique perspective in this resource.

There are also plenty of resources available online for those who feel more comfortable reading from a screen.

Hockey Canada Network App: The Hockey Canada Network offers coaches, players and parents in every community across Canada access to the best information for developing hockey players. It provides on-demand access to thousands of articles and videos.
