How Videos can help Improve Practices

Sometimes another viewpoint adds a new perspective

Every coach enters each game with a plan. Whether it ends in a win, loss or tie, there are always areas to improve upon throughout the season.

Seeing improvement and growing skill in your team should always be one of the main goals of a coach. From the first whistle in the season opener to the final whistle at the start of spring (hopefully at the end of a Playdowns victory), each player on the team should notice an uptick in their skill level and feel their abilities on the ice have grown since the start of the year.

There are a number of resources available to coaches throughout the season to help improve the team. If you are looking to keep track of performance or ensuring that everything is being covered, there are checklists that exist that will create proper feedback.

Sometimes it’s necessary to stop and take a step back before being able to move forward. By allowing for an outsider’s perspective or suggestion on how to improve a specific aspect of the game and opening up to new ideas, coaches are able to always be learning and teaching new skills.

Each player grasps concepts in a different way. Much like in the classroom, some are visual learners while others understand better through experience. Watching videos of drills being performed gives players and coaches a different viewpoint of how to execute certain techniques. This outside perspective can add another element of properly learning a new concept.

Another tip for coaches who want to incorporate more video into their practice plans is to record what is happening on the ice. Are the instructions being communicated clearly? How are the players responding to what is being asked of them? A coach can answer these questions by reviewing the tape and noting how efficiently a practice is being run.

The OMHA offers plenty of video resources on a number of topics on our YouTube page. Remember to subscribe to be notified of each new video post.
