Kevin Stubbington, a Life Member with the Windsor Minor Hockey Association and an Innovator, passed away suddenly.

Kevin coached many years in the WMHA and was a strong supporter of the game.  

After seeing a player get injured after being checked from behind in a game in 1998, he wondered what could be done to reduce those injuries. He designed a miniature Stop Sign and lobbied to have it placed on the back of the players jerseys. This spawned the S.T.O.P. program or Safety Towards Other Players. The OMHA adopted the program to raise awareness of the dangers of checking from behind. It was soon mandatory for all Minor Hockey Associations throughout Canada.

“The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Stubbington. His contributions to the Windsor Minor Hockey Association and to improving the sport will not be forgotten," said Richard Ropchan, Executive Director of the OMHA. "The creation of the S.T.O.P. program has increased the safety of players on the ice and will be a lasting reminder of his impact on the game of hockey throughout Canada.”

In 2007, Kevin was awarded the Dr. Tom Pashby Sports Safety Award. The Award honours Canadians who have made a significant contribution to prevent catastrophic injuries in sports and recreational activities.

Kevin was a humble man and well liked by all who knew him. His contributions to the WMHA and Minor Hockey will not be forgotten.
