OMHA and Respect Group Inc. deliver 'Respect' signs to all member associations

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is proud to launch a new respect campaign in partnership with Respect Group Inc., where every member association will receive a ‘Respect in Hockey’ sign customized for their association to display in their local arena. This campaign continues to shape the OMHA’s stance to grow and maintain respect in hockey and build on the respect initiatives already launched.

“As the game of hockey continues to evolve it is the responsibility of us all to change with it – but more importantly, to be the agents for positive change.” said OMHA President, Rob Ring. “Ultimately, we seek to provide the very best programming, as well as a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone in which to enjoy all the positive opportunities our great game has to offer”

“We are excited to be partnering with OMHA on this initiative. Their RESPECT leadership sets a positive example for all hockey organizations across Canada”, said Respect Group Co-Founder Wayne McNeil.  “With proactive training as the underpinning of the OMHA culture, this campaign further emphasizes the important message of keeping hockey safe and respectful for all participants”.

At least one parent or guardian of each player registered in the OMHA have been required to complete the Respect in Sport - Parent Program as a condition of participation. This program reinforces a parent’s role by encouraging positive sport behaviors and providing insight into other roles (such as coaches and officials) play. The Respect in Sport Parent program empowers parents to ensure their child’s safety, encourages positive and effective communication, and creates a standard of respectful behavior for all parents of active kids.

Team Officials, On-ice Officials and On-ice volunteers have been required to complete the online Respect in Sport - Activity Leader Program or in-class Speak Out! Certification. This training enables sport and community organizations to create a safer, more ethical environment by providing essential information to each organization’s critical stakeholders.

The signs will act as a simple reminder to players, parents, coaches and officials that respect is an integral part of hockey.  The Ontario Minor Hockey Association has also released a bank of signage in varying sizes to its member associations including posters and web banners to promote the campaign.
