OMHA teams take home four OHF Championships

Fifteen teams represented the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) at the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Championships. A total of five teams participate at each of the thirteen OHF Championships including the host team plus the champions from Alliance Hockey, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Northern Ontario Hockey Association and the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.

The Uxbridge Stars represented the OMHA at the Atom A division tournament in Temiskaming Shores April 10-12th. The Stars came out to a great start, going 3-1 in the round robin to would slide through the semi-finals against the Port Credit Storm by a score of 3-1. This moved them into the gold medal game against the Copper Cliff Redman, where they had a convincing 6-2 win to capture the gold medal.

The Atom AA Championships were held in Whitby as the Wildcats looked for revenge after being bumped in the OMHA Quarter-Finals by eventual OMHA Champions, Clarington Toros. Both Whitby and Clarington successfully moved into the semi-finals. Both teams fought hard but ended up stalling out. 

The Quinte Red Devils Atom AAA team headed to Toronto for their chance at an OHF Championship. The Red Devils went 2-1-1 in round robin action which was good enough for second place and a spot in the semi-finals. They played the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs and won 6-3 to move them to the finals. In the gold medal game they faced off against the host Toronto Marlboros who ended up edging out the Red Devils 4-3.

The Grimsby Peach Kings represented the OMHA in the Peewee A category, which was held in Stratford. The Peach Kings had a fantastic round robin going 4-0 and scoring 23 goals in the 4 games. They played the Meadowvale Mohawks and easily walked past them with a 6-1 win to earn their spot in the gold medal game. Grimsby had a tough game against the Woodstock Navy Vets and came out with a 4-2 win to capture the OHF Championship.

The Richmond Hill Stars earned a berth into the Peewee AA Championship after sweeping two of their four series on way to an OMHA Championship. They kept their strong play going into the weekend finishing 3-1 in the round robin. They faced a tough Streetsville Tigers team in the semis and came away with a 4-3 win and a spot in the finals. The Stars played the London Jr. Knights for gold and after losing in the round robin to London, Richmond was looking to get some payback. They were able to beat London 5-1 and win the gold medal.

The York-Simcoe Express will hosted the Peewee AAA division April 6-10 at the Nottawasaga Inn. The back-to-back OMHA Champions, Oakville Rangers were also in attendance. Both York Simcoe and Oakville had successful round robins with the Express going 2-3-1 and the Rangers finishing 4-1-1. Both teams earned a spot in the semi-finals but each eventually lost their games. This made it an all OMHA bronze medal game with the Rangers coming out on top again winning 4-2.

The Welland Tigers headed to Toronto for the Bantam A Championship. The Tigers finished first in the round robin going 2-0-2. In the semi-finals they played the Vaughn Panthers and after a tough battle won the game 2-1. This earned them a spot in the finals against the Sarnia Jr. Sting. With their eyes set on gold the Tigers came to play and beat Sarnia 5-1.

Having only lost two games in the entire OMHA Playdowns, the Oakville Rangers looked to continue their winning ways in Stratford as they represented the OMHA in Bantam AA division. The Rangers had a good round robin going 2-1-1 and only allowed 5 goals against in their four games. They moved on to the semis and played a tough London Jr. Knights team who also went 2-1-1 in the round robin. A close game between two evenly matched teams, the Rangers lost 2-1 to the Jr. Knights. 

The Clarington Toros represented the OMHA in the Bantam AAA division which was held in Timmins. The Toros finished the round robin going 3-3 earning them a berth in the semi-finals. In the semis they lost 5-4 to the eventual OHF Champions, Mississauga Rebels.

Orillia hosted the Midget A division April 10-12 at the West Orillia Sports Complex with OMHA Champions,  Quinte West Hawks in attendance as well. The Terriers went an impressive 4-0 in the round robin and the West Hawks went 2-2. This earned both teams spots in the semis with the Terriers playing Sarnia Jr. Sting and Quinte playing North Toronto. The Terriers won their game 3-0 earning them a spot in the finals. Unfortunately the West Hakws lost a tough game 4-2 against North Toronto. The battle for gold was between the host Orillia Terriers and North Toronto. After an exciting and tough game North Toronto finished on top 4-3, leaving the host Terriers with the silver medal they should be proud of. 

The Ajax Knights put their stingy defense to the test as they headed to Hearst for the Midget AA division. The Knights went undefeated in round robin play finishing 4-0. They then walked over the London Jr. Knights in the semis 5-1 earning them a spot in the gold medal game. They played a strong Mississauga North Stars team and got behind early. The Knights couldn’t recover and would go on to drop the game, 5-1.

The Whitby Wildcats represented the OMHA at the Midget AAA Championships in Toronto March 30-April 5, looking to earn a spot in the Telus Cup. The Wildcats finished second in the round robin with a record of 3-1-1 which earned them a spot in the semi-finals against the London Jr. Knights. The Wildcats lost the semi-final game but earned some redemption in the bronze medal game, with a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators. 

The Ajax Knights hosted the Juvenile OHF Championship, April 10-12 at the Ajax Community Centre. The OMHA was also represented by the Whitby Wildcats who earned a berth into the championships. Ajax went 3-1 earning them a spot in the semi-finals while the Wildcats had a disappointing 0-4 finish. The Knights played the Mississauga Braves and lost 3-2 ending their chance at a repeat.
