Three tips to help when considering to replace a piece of equipment

Another new hockey season is here and it’s finally time to pull the hockey equipment out of the basement and dust it off. Before going to the rink it is important to make sure everything fits the way it did in April and assess what had too much wear and tear on it over the course of the previous season. If it is time for some equipment upgrades how do you know what you need to replace? Pro Hockey Life has three tips to help you when considering whether you need to replace a piece of equipment.

What kind of physical condition is your equipment in?

The first indication when considering whether you need a new piece of equipment is always the physical condition of the gear itself. Even if the piece of equipment still fits properly it’s important to ensure that it’s safe to use. Always inspect your gear for signs of damage, looking for cracks, tears; missing pieces etc. Also, make sure that you inspect your gear for signs of mold or mildew or other harmful bacteria that can form on your gear and cause serious infections. It’s important that you hang your gear to dry in a cool ventilated area after each use and clean it from time to time using anti-bacterial sprays or washing cycles. Inspecting your gear should be done on an ongoing basis throughout the year after each game or practice. Taking care of your gear will help it last longer and perform better.

Does it fit your body?

If the piece of equipment no longer fits properly, it could leave you susceptible to a lack of protection, performance, mobility and comfort. At the beginning of each season and throughout the course of the year you should always check to ensure that your gear is still fitting properly. Make sure that each individual piece fits and that all of the pieces fit together properly to provide you with the highest level of protection and performance that your gear can offer.

Does it still fit your game?

Your gear may still be in good condition and it still may fit properly, that being said it may no longer be the right piece of equipment for your needs. As you develop as a player or as your style of game changes or perhaps your position changes or maybe you’re changing leagues or level of play, what you require from your gear may also change. A player may require more protection or more mobility; perhaps more performance or all of the above that the old piece of gear does not offer. Equipment is built around features and it’s important that you select the piece of that has the right set of features for your needs.
