2010 OMHA Under 17 Program Details Announced

The OMHA is pleased to announce details of the 2010 OMHA Under 17 Regional Evaluation Camps presented by Adrenaline Hockey. Regional Under 17 camps are the entry-point to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence providing players born in 1994 to participate in a weekend program that involves on-ice/off-ice evaluation as well as career path instruction.
 
The OMHA will conduct four Regional Under 17 Evaluation Camps across the OMHA on the weekend of April 16-18, 2010. Camps will be hosted in the following locations:
  • Georgetown, ON
  • Midland, ON
  • Peterborough, ON 
  • Simcoe, ON

Program Overview
 
In operation since 1986, the OMHA Under 17 Program is the entry-point to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence.
 
The OMHA conducts four Regional Under 17 Evaluation Camps each year. Each camp selects sixty-eight [68] Minor Midget-aged players to participate in a weekend program that involves on-ice/off-ice evaluation, as well as career path instruction. Seventeen [17] players including two [2] goaltenders will be selected from each Regional Evaluation Camp to attend the OMHA Under 17 Final Camp in May at the University of Guelph.
 
From this Final Evaluation Camp, players will be selected to attend the Team Ontario Under 17 Provincial Selection Camp, which will identify players for participation in such events as the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.
 
Notable players who have participated in the OMHA Under 17 Program in the past include Steven Stamkos [#1 overall NHL Entry Draft, 2008], Corey Perry, Michael Del Zotto [#20 Overall, NHL Entry Draft, 2008], Greg Nemisz [#25 Overall, NHL Entry Draft, 2008], Cameron Gaunce [#50 Overall, NHL Entry Draft, 2008], Keith Primeau, Adam Foote, Ed Jovanovski, Owen Nolan, Mike Fisher, John Hughes [#1 Overall, OHL Priority Selection, 2004].
Regional Camp Program Features:
  • 1 practice Friday, prior to round-robin games.
  • 3 game round robin format
  • Full fitness testing/evaluation under the supervision of Master Course Conductors from the OMHA Trainers Program
  • Selected guest speakers: Career options and fitness & nutrition education

Each Regional Camp Participant Receives:

  • Official OMHA Under 17 pro-style jersey, socks & camp shirt
  • 1 group meal
  • Sponsor giveaways/gifts

Under 17 Program - Staff Applications
The OMHA Under 17 Regional Evaluation Camps also provide an opportunity for Coaches & Trainers to participate in our High Performance Program of Excellence. The OMHA is now accepting staffing applications for the upcoming 2010 OMHA Under 17 Program. All applications are due by January 31, 2010. Each Regional Camp Selection Committee will review applications.
 
Two Coaches from each Regional Camp will be selected to attend the OMHA Under 17 Final Camp at the University of Guelph.
