Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Oakville, ON: -  Starting on Friday, January 11, the Novice Red Oakville Thunderhawks skated their way to become tournament champs at the Jayden Elmore Memorial Tournament in London.

Winning five straight games, the Thunderhawks rallied together in their strongest showing this season much to the delight of family members and fans.

Game 1 saw the Thunderhawks hang on to a 3-1 win against the Port Credit Storm even staving off a 6 on 3 shorthanded deficit in the final minutes of the game. Next up was a tough game against London North but the Thunderhawks came out with a solid 2-1 victory. The final round robin game against top ranked SSE London Wild ended in another Thunderhawk victory, 4-3, and a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play.

Moving on to the semi finals, the Thunderhawks put forth a relentless effort to win a convincing 8-3 victory and secure a spot in the finals.

Oakville`s championship game pitted them against London North once again. The game featured several great scoring opportunities for both sides but the Thunderhawks fell behind early in the game. After the team rallied hard and exhibited tough defensive play and strong forechecking, Oliver Brenninkmeijer tied the game 2-2. And in the last few minutes, Matthew MacPherson brought on the game winner with Oakville emerging as tournament champions in a close 3-2 win.

For most of the boys on the team, this victory represents their first ever tournament gold with hopefully more to come. “The determination and teamwork displayed by all the players throughout the weekend couldn’t make the coaches and parents more proud,” said Head Coach Chris Hudson. “Every player played beyond their maximum level and showed great fortitude to never give up until the final buzzer.”

Team members include: Cade Hudson, Connor Waters, Matthew MacPherson, Mekaille Carbone, Jack Skinner, Eric Vann, Benito Ritacco, Aidan O`Rourke, Oliver Brenninkmeijer, William Herbert, Graeme Leiper, Aidan Ashall, Andrew Palucci, Keegan Walker, Matthew Grbavac and Ryan Bouwman.
