Pickering, ON: -
The Pickering Panthers Midget A team travelled to Montreal this past weekend to compete in the CAN/AM Classic Tournament. The Panthers played teams from across Canada, including the South Delta Storm from British Columbia.
Pickering headed into the tournament on a role with a record of 9 -2-2 in their last 13 games. The Panthers continued their stellar play. Pickering goalies, Adam Fujita and Steven Paul held the competition to only 3 goals against for the entire tournament. In the Championship game the Panthers played the Cornwall Colts who beat the Panthers in the round robin.
The spectacular final saw both teams playing an aggressive and physical game. However, a determined Panther team took control of the game in the second period with a power play goal from team captain Conor McLeod. Shortly after the Panthers added a second goal from forward Karl Schnalzer. With 4 minutes left in the games the Colts pressed hard, however the Panther offence proved too strong. With 2 minutes left in the game, the Panthers forced the play deep in the Colts zone and Schnalzer bagged the teams third goal to put the game on ice! Steven Paul earned the shutout.
The Panthers finished the tournament with most goals for, least goals against and fewest penalty minutes of any team. In addition Joshua Nat won a $1,000 Scholarship from CAN AM hockey for excellence in academics and athletics.
